To fall in love

“To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek Him the greatest adventure; to find Him, the greatest human achievement.” St. Augustine

Happy super frosty Saturday,

That time of year has once again arrived. The weekend of Valentine’s Day with all it’s icky over-commercialism, sweet candy hearts, stuffed animals and fragrant flowers. Although I could always lament being single with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s cookie dough ice-cream and a sappy Nicholas Sparks movie or jam out to Taylor Swift who never disappoints, I’m hopeing this entry is a bit more mature. 🙂

Today’s post is about gifts which surpass presents.

Often I’ve read blog entries from women who have written to the men who have broken their hearts. While I also have been through unexpected endings of significant romantic relationships, I am writing from the perspective of viewing my heartbreaks as a chance for growth and renewed strength. I have had many years to reflect over what I’d like to tell the men who were put in my life for a reason or season.

Here is what I have to say:

  • Thank you: you brought me closer to God
  • Thank you: you reinforced I need to always love Jesus more than my fellow flawed humans
  • Thank you: you revealed to me my inner strength and proved that I could bounce back from difficulties
  • Thank you: you showed me how beautiful it is to love and be loved
  • Thank you: you helped me set standards for relationships and were an example that it’s respectable to actively live out my Catholic faith and values
  • Thank you: you brought me closer to our Blessed momma Mary through the Rosary
  • Thank you: you taught me not to solely depend on myself and others, rather the unconditional holy love of God will only and always satisfy the longing in my soul
  • Thank you: you accepted me for who I was and encouraged me to become a wiser, stronger woman
  • Thank you: you were put in my life to teach me unique lessons. I will always be grateful for your charity, wisdom and friendship. These gifts are more important than any tangible present
  • Thank you: your witty personality and kindness are characteristics I pray for in my future husband
  • Thank you: you have provided me a beautiful, unique soul to always pray for
  • Thank you: you enriched my passion for books and music
  • Thank you: whether it was the peace of adoration or the serenity of the natural spring, you imparted to me the lesson that so much can be said in silence
  • Thank you: you provided me unique memorable experiences
  • Thank you: you brought me one step closer to the one I pray I was created to complement
  • Thank you: you listened to where God led you despite my stubborn resistance to let you go
  • Thank you: you will always be a part of my life story
  • Thank you: you pushed me out of my comfort zone in order for me to climb mountains I never thought I could traverse
  • Thank you: you were placed in my life for a reason and season to which God only knows
  • Thank you: if it’s God’s will, you fortified my heart for the next man I date
  • Thank you: you taught me being single is not a state in life, rather it is a unique journey
  • Thank you for the above and so much more.

“Sometimes the only way the good Lord can get into some hearts is to break them.” Fulton J. Sheen
