The Silence of God: lyrics reflection

The Silence of God

Andrew Peterson

“When you come to know God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him. And, in fact, He shows much more of Himself to some people than to others — not because He has favourites, but because it is impossible for Him to show Himself to a man whose whole mind and character are in the wrong condition. Just as sunlight, though it has no favourites, cannot be reflected in a dusty mirror as clearly as in a clean one.” C.S. Lewis

It’s enough to drive a man crazy, it’ll break a man’s faith

It’s enough to make him wonder, if he’s ever been sane

When he’s bleating for comfort from Thy staff and Thy rod

And the Heaven’s only answer is the silence of God

It’ll shake a man’s timbers when he loses his heart

When he has to remember what broke him apart

This yoke may be easy but this burden is not

When the crying fields are frozen by the silence of God

And if a man has got to listen to the voices of the mob

Who are reeling in the throes of all the happiness they’ve got

When they tell you all their troubles

Have been nailed up to that cross

Then what about the times when even followers get lost?

‘Cause we all get lost sometimes

There’s a statue of Jesus on a monastery knoll

In the hills of Kentucky, all quiet and cold

And He’s kneeling in the garden, as silent as a Stone

All His friends are sleeping and He’s weeping all alone

And the man of all sorrows, he never forgot

What sorrow is carried by the hearts that he bought

So when the questions dissolve into the silence of God

The aching may remain but the breaking does not

The aching may remain but the breaking does not

In the holy, lonesome echo of the silence of God

Good blessed Sunday,

For many reasons, especially on this memorable date, the next upcoming months are not always the easiest for me. Whether it’s memories of events which ranged the emotional gamut of feeling happiness to deep despair, the lyrics of this song speak to where I am spiritually.

I often get caught up in seeking answers from God about why situations happened, why friendships dissolved, why loved one’s died and why I do not feel His comforting presence as I once did.

Here are some lessons I am learning through this silence:

Just as are flawed messy human relationships with friends or significant others go through stages of closeness and distance, so is getting to recognize what it means to know and love God.

When our hearts are brimming of hurt, anger and resentment, the refusal to let go of the past and actively make changes does not open ourselves to God’s healing grace,

It’s in the tough times in which our questions do not have immediate answers,

The painful moments of loss and heartache which increases gratitude for the mountain top moments,

When we display our authentic selves during the unpolished realistic ups and downs of this earthly journey,

The realization we are not the God of our lives,

It’s when we are spiritually strengthened and formed in our brokenness and realize God’s silence has brought us to a more refined appreciation of our Creator,

It’s the knowledge that although many of our questions and desires may not be answered or come to fruition on this side of heaven, God’s perfect will and plan is greater than our limited human understanding.

If you are going through a spiritual dry spell, know you are in my prayers. May we always unwaveringly seek the peace of God which surpasses understanding. (Philippians 4:7)

Until next time,
